This shore excursion to Pisa and Lucca offers an attractive opportunity to visit two of Tuscany’s most attractive towns in one day.

Lucca and its unforgettable walls system

Your first stop on your private shore excursion will be Lucca, the medieval treasure of Tuscany entirely enclosed within its sturdy city walls (one hour drive from La Spezia port). Elegant and immaculately-kept, Lucca has an endless number of striking churches, including the Cathedral of San Martino and the dazzling San Michele. Enjoy the charming square once the site of a Roman Amphitheatre, the wider Piazza Napoleone with an excellent range of shops and restaurants. Opera fans may also like to visit the museum dedicated to Giacomo Puccini who was born here.

For added fun, hire a bicycle for an hour or two to explore the hidden corners of Lucca, or take a stroll along the top of the wide city walls. After lunch at a local trattoria, you can opt to head for one of the splendid old villas in the surroundings of Lucca, such as the sumptuous 16th-century Villa Torrigiani or the Royal Villa at Marlia. Or perhaps you would prefer a wine-tasting session at a local winery at nearby Montecarlo is renowned for its wines and offers ample tasting opportunities. Just let your driver know your preferences!

From Lucca it is just a 30 / 40 minute drive to Pisa. Approaching the city centre you will soon realise that Pisa is not just about its world-famous Leaning Tower. As you wind through the narrow cobbled streets you will catch glimpses of ancient churches and medieval tower houses before finally coming to stop in the Piazza dei Miracoli, the site of the 12th-century leaning bell tower for which Pisa is so renowned. This stunning World Heritage site, with its Cathedral and circular Baptistry, will no doubt inspire your photography skills. You will have a stop of half an hour here.
The drive back to La Spezia takes about an hour.
