La Spezia port to Florence and Pisa

Probably Tuscany’s most famous cities, Florence and Pisa can be visited in one day on our carefully designed chauffeur-driven private shore excursion, by luxury minivan, available from the ports of Livorno and La Spezia, during which you will experience some of the most awe-inspiring landmarks in Italy.
To get the most from your shore excursion, an early start is recommended.

The drive from La Spezia to Florence takes about 1h 50m. Once in the heart of the city, top of the list for first-time visitors to Florence will no doubt include the Ponte Vecchio – the bridge over the Arno fortunately spared by the WWII bombings and famous for its traditional jewellery stores -, and the marble-clad Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence’s cathedral (known simply as the “Duomo”) with its astonishing gravity-defying Cupola. In the same square stand two other masterpieces – the recently-restored octagonal Baptistry, one of the oldest buildings in Florence, and the soaring 14th-century Bell Tower designed by the celebrated painter and architect Giotto di Bondone, one of the founders of Italian Renaissance architecture. Another must-see is Michelangelo’s sculpture of David, the giant white marble statue of the biblical hero which the artist began when he was only 26. The original stands in the Accademia gallery (ask us to make a reservation for you), but you can also see a copy of Michelangelo’s masterpiece in Piazza della Signoria, another landmark which is also the site of the city hall, the Palazzo Vecchio.

Your driver will make a first stop in Piazza Santa Croce where you can spend a short time browsing the leather stores or exploring Santa Croce church, where Michelangelo, Galileo and other illustrious Italian figures are buried. Then drive further into the very heart of Florence where you will be dropped to explore the Tuscan capital further on your own. If you wish, you may choose to stay with your private van to drive between your chosen sites around Florence.

Of course, no excursion to Tuscany would be complete without a taste of local Tuscan cuisine and your private driver will be happy to recommend a local Florentine restaurant to suit your tastes and budget. Food-enthusiasts might also like to visit the Mercato Centrale, the fascinating indoor food market of Florence, while shopping fans will find plenty of tempting stores, from designer labels to local crafts – just let your driver know what you are looking for.

As you leave Florence for Pisa, you will make a short stop at Piazzale Michelangelo where you can enjoy the fabulous view of the city. Don’t forget to look for the beautiful Romanesque church of San Miniato a Monte which stands above the square, overlooking Florence.

From Florence, the drive to Pisa takes about 1 hour 15m. You will soon be in the heart of the town, driving along its stunning river bank, catching glimpses of ancient churches and medieval tower houses, winding through the city’s narrow cobbled streets, before arriving at what is probably the most famous square in the world, Piazza dei Miracoli, the site of the Leaning Tower, the 12th-century bell tower for which Pisa is so renowned. A short stop here will also allow you to take in the incredible Pisan-Romanesque architecture of the Cathedral, and the circular Baptistry, all standing proudly together in this historic World Heritage site.
Your drive back to the port of La Spezia will take about 1 hour.
